In the Stafford roll of service the following are commemorated: Stanyer, Fred - Crooked Bridge Rd Stanyer, Sidney (correspondent Doug Stanyer's grandfather) killed in action July 1st 1917 - 58 Crooked Bridge Rd Stanyer, Arthur - Crokked Bridge Rd (served with W.Yorks?) Stanyer, Frank - 58 Crooked Bridge Rd (Doug's father was Reginald James Edwin - 31.12.14 - 11.76)
A visit to the Commonwealth war Graves Commission site informs us that Sidneys parents were: Mr and Mrs E Stanyer of 58 Crooked Bridge Rd Stafford, and the parents of the other named soldiers who presumably survived the war, all having served with the North Staffs Regiment.
However, 7 other Stanyers are listed as casualties of the first world war. 4 Stanyers were killed in world war two, 3 in naval service. A Canadian Stanyer is also listed as a caualty of the first world war but I will post his details later.
In Australia Jeff Stanyer tells me he was an instructor for the Australian Navy at HMAS CERBERUS in Victoria, leaving after 21 years service in 1985. Presently, he is a teacher (like me!).
Also in Australia, Greg Stanyer informs me that he (16.4.59) his father is Ian (3.12.37) and his grandfather Roy died in 1974. Gregs uncles are Ian, Ralph (retired Headmaster living in Bendigo), Max (owns a construction company) and Keith (farmer). Roys wife died in 1941: he remarried Nellie and had a son, Bruce (presently in Bendigo). Greg lives in Currumbin (look on your maps!) and has 2 boys and 2 girls. Ralphs son Ashley (Greg's cousin), survived the Bali bomb blast in October 2002.
